High notes of the Hilton Colombo Residences, Sri Lanka
Landing in Colombo, Sri Lanka is certainly a shock to the system compared to the sterility and sanctity of Singapore.
The traffic - an absolute organised mess of bicycles, motorbikes, cars, trucks, buses and people trying to weave their way through the shouting and beeping of Colombo roads. A trip which should take 10mins from A to B would take triple the time due to the constant traffic congestion in some areas.
Loved the shopping - fantastic boutiques to our delight for men and ladies alike!
We settled into the Hilton Colombo Residences and were pleased the Head Chef was attentive to our son's food allergy needs. Breakfast for my son is usually fruit and/or a salad until we have time to discuss menu options. The kitchen staff ensured us there would be no issue. We asked for a Shepherds Pie to be made for lunch and the kitchen staff unfortunately did not understand the recipe and brought the mash separate from the bolognaise sauce which had pasta mixed into the dish!!
I immediately stopped my son from eating the pasta. Where did the pasta come from? Was it eggless? This is not the correct recipe....what happened!! Thank God my son did not touch the pasta, we later discovered the pasta contained egg and was added to the dish by a member of the kitchen staff unaware of his serious food allergies!!
My blood pressure shot up that afternoon because the kitchen staff was totally ignorant and extremely complacent about the incident.
Chef Rohan and Chef Permila were later apologetic and soon took charge when preparing my son's menu and soon he enjoyed delicious meals for the remainder of his stay - Gnocchi, Mushroom Penne and Pizza.
So, although it is a struggle to educate people about food allergies in various parts of the world, you should never give up and always be on 200% guard when food is served....nobody can be trusted 100% and mistakes happen all the time...all you can do as a parent is educate the Food and Beverage Manager, meet the Head Chef personally and hope the message has been relayed to all kitchen staff on duty.
A big thank you to the Chefs at Colombo Hilton Residences!!
